I have had an assortment of names through out my life, by birth though, I am Kyle OBrien. Do a bit of Googling and you can find me under XeroCint, Kai, and in 9th grade I decided I was going to be called “Xin” for a year.
The name may have changed, the entrepreneurial/dream driven person stayed the same.
I’ve tried to start a number of bands but was frustrated by the lack of interest and general tomfoolery of the other people involved.
I hop from project to project but there are two that I’ve finally settled on that I plan to make last my entire life.
I’ve been a photographer.
I’ve been an illustrator.
I’ve been a designer.
I’ve been an actor.
I’ve been a singer.
I’ve been a guitarist.
I’ve been a composer.
I've been a developer.
I've been a director.
I’ve been and still am all of those things but most importantly I’m an artist and a thinker.
My ultimate goal in life is to make other lives easier, whether it be for consumers, producers, artists, or my own mother. That’s my own personal goal.
So, my personal stake in this is that I see a lot of talent in potential in each of you involved in this project, and I feel with time it could grow into the organization I described above. I want this to be able to be the start of a next generation of artists and programmers and intelligent minds, and I believe it has that potential. In the following months, years, and yes, decades to come, this has the potential to grow from a couple kids on computers into a remarkably influential organization. Where do you fit in? You’ll be wealthy and powerful, with the network and freedom to create your own creative visions as you see fit. You could live in mansion with a garage full of sports cars. You could be able to call up people around the globe instantly to work on your next program, your next invention, your next album.
Then again, it’s only potential.
I foresee that this could become a very real endeavor, but we need a very real commitment from each of you. You need to be willing to work and learn, a lot. Many of you are “just kids,” but I’ll be the first to tell you that in my eyes you are all equal regardless of age, because we are all thinkers and creators. That being said, I am entrusting you with the same level of responsibility I’d give to anyone else. Remember that as an organization, we will be competing with people who have many more years of experience than we do. But I believe in the resiliency and power of youth.
I think one of the big questions from everyone is “WHAT ARE WE HERE TO ACTUALLY DO?”
Well….I’ll tell you.
We are creating what will first be an NPO, a non-profit organization, to get us off the ground. We will be offering products as well as services, and funneling money back to ourselves through “grants” for our artists.
What will we be offering?
In part, that will be up to you. Though what he have already decided on is that this is an Umbrella Association, which is a simple way of saying that we will be split into divisions, with a broad name that connects us all while we work together.
There are going to be multiple divisions of the company, and these have been the first proposed:
Programming:
Obviously, this will be software. Future projects include iphone and droid apps, freeware programs, and eventually paid programs. This is one of most important divisions of the company.
In terms of services, members will also help program websites and other applications for outside clients.
Design and Visual Arts:
This involves any visual aspect of any project we do, from animation to design to editing. This division will be working closely with Programming a lot of the time to make the visuals for all software and apps.
In terms of services, members will also create logos and branding for outside clients.
Sound Engineering:
This involves all sounds necessary for programs, including interactive sounds, background music, and any themes/overtures.
This department has the potential to expand to cover specific artists, whether outside or within the company, for recording, mixing, and mastering purposes. It could also expand to include its own recording label.
In terms of services, members will provide sound consulting and recording services as well as writing and recording music for outside clients.
Electronics:
This involves all physical products that we make. It will involve the creation and production of any hardware.
This is the most client-based department, as all products will theoretically be up for sale. Though there are no plans for mass-production for another 5 years or so, we can offer boutique, custom electronics such as computers and musical amplifiers. These will be custom-designed to fit each client’s needs and will be an excellent way to spread reputation in the physical world.
Editing and Language:
This involves the careful wording and editing of all our products for whatever manuals, in-design text, or other written words they might contain. The department facilitates consumer-friendly language that will attract customers to our products and keep them loyal to our hardware and services.
But there’s still the question: “What on earth are we here to do?”
Well, there are a lot of things we have in mind, and myself and several others are discussing long-term projects. We have to build company hype, reputation, and loyalty. So what can we develop quickly to get our name out?
iPhone apps and Droid apps are a quick way for programmers to build chops and create a product.
The hardware at first will be focused on electronics with music- and computer-based applications.
The design needs to create the company website and our own personal websites so that we have examples of branding and design for outside clients to view, who will then purchase our services.
Also, we’re thinking of ways to make improvements upon current software programs, then releasing our own version as freeware. Imagine if someone made a more user-friendly, powerful, and visually appealing competitor against Adobe Photoshop and then released it for FREE. Boom. Instant reputation for our company. That is a long-term project, though, and will probably take several years.
But to make all this, we need SKILLS. Desperately. That’s what the summer’s for. Based on division, everyone will be expected to have a certain skillset. Designers must be proficient in certain visual programs, Programmers must know certain languages, Sound engineers must know proper mixing and mastering technique, and the folks over at electronics have to know how exactly to create what we ask of them. We are in the process of selecting which programs and skills to master over the next 6 months and for the foreseeable future, but remember that we will be competing against highly trained individuals so we must become highly trained at a professional level.
As part of the process of learning, we will be creating products and services. Learning while we create, creating in order to learn.
Again, you’ll have a very big part in deciding the specifics, but this whole operation is here to benefit all of us. You’ll learn professional skills that will serve you for your college and adult careers while making a company that, with any luck and a whole lot of hard work, will be paying you six-figure salaries within a decade.
***
So we have many steps to make from here. This is the formative period of the company, meaning each and every person on board will be a vital part of the company. We will be splitting you into the divisions, though all the divisions will be working with each other extensively.
Now, things may be slow at first in terms of progress. We have a lot of learning to do, a lot of deciding to do. This WILL be a process that takes years. But if you are willing to take a big leap and a big risk with us, there will be a tremendous reward.
And if NOTHING else, this will look excellent on your resume and portfolio for colleges, internships, and jobs in the future. Though if everything works out well, this will BE your job in the future anyway.
Remember, Microsoft started with Bill Gates dropping out of college and building shit in his garage.
So if you’re with us, and willing to be part of this family in the months and years to come, this is where the actual interviewing process comes in.
Decide which department or departments you would like to be placed in.
Then send me your resume of skills and experiences. Anything at all that relates to the tasks at hand. You should list any skills you have, not just ones for the department(s) to which you’re applying.
In addition, please answer the following questions: It’s just for us to get a sense of who you are and the way in which you work.
1.What do you expect to gain from this collaborative company in the short-term and long-term?
2.What would you LIKE to gain from it in the short-term and long-term; why are you interested in being a part of this company?
3.What is the setting or style that allows you to work best?
4.If you had a million dollars in your pocket right now and could not save it, how would you spend it and why?
5.What questions or concerns do you have about the company as a whole?
6.What’s your favorite taste?
7.If you didn’t have to work a day in your life, what would you do with your time?
8.What do you like to do to relax?
9.Why do you think you would work best in the department(s) for which you’re applying?
10.Who is your hero?
Please email your resumes and the answers to the questions to i@orphicinc.com
And relax! I’ve been writing in pretty corporate and professional language but please don’t be scared. I’m super excited to work with everyone, and these resumes are going to help us figure out what we need to learn this summer, how to place everyone, and what our very first projects are going to be. You’re all welcome on the team and we’re trying to figure out how best to use the resources we’ve got
Here’s a toast to you, to this summer, and to what we’re going to accomplish!
Cheers, and thanks for making it through such a long letter.
